Jordan Nwora has exceeded D’Tigers captain, Ike Diogu, in the most points ever scored by a Nigerian player in a competitive event.
Nwora registered 36 points on Sunday night, in the Nigeria’s men senior basketball team 93 to 53 win over Mali in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 African Qualifiers (window 3) at the Indoor Sports Hall, National stadium, Surulere. In the process, the 19 year old eclipses Diogu’s 31-point mark, which the Sinchuan Blue Whales of China player achieved twice.
In addition to his 36 points, Nwora, the University of Louisville, USA, player obtained 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. Diogu added 21 points and 5 rebounds, while Mehinti Tosin Idowu had 14 points and 5 rebounds against the Malians to ensure D’Tigers march into the next round of the World Cup Qualfiers still undefeated (6-0)!
Nwora, son of D’Tigers Head Coach, Alex Nwora, is one of eight debutants in the team.
His latest achievement add to the honour the Nworas accomplished as the first family to have father and son in the Nigerian national basketball team at the same time.
Earlier, hosts, Nigeria, had beaten Rwanda 111 to 70, and Uganda, 109 to 66.
It is the first time the national team will play its world cup qualifiers at home and the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Lagos, was specifically renovated for the qualifiers.
The first leg of the second round tournament will take place during the fourth window between September 10th to 18th before the return leg between 26th of November and 4th of December. During this period, D’Tigers could slug it out with the likes of Senegal, Cote d’Ivoire, Mozambique and Central Africa Republic who are as well big names in African basketball.
The world cup which is the flagship edition made up of 32 teams will take place in China from 31st August to 15th September, 2019.
