Super Eagles Central Defender, Chidozie Awaziem has expressed his happiness at featuring in his first official game this term for Portuguese powerhouse, FC Porto.
Awaziem played in Porto’s 4-2 win over Varzim in the Taça da Liga (Portuguese League Cup) Group stage on Wednesday night.
The 21 year old returned to the Estádio do Dragão after a season-long loan at Nantes in France.
Born in Enugu, South-East Nigeria, Awaziem joined FC Porto of Portugal in 2014, where he spent his last year as a junior and won the corresponding league title. Prior to joining Porto, he did not play any level of league football locally. His senior debuts were made with the B-team, in the Segunda Liga.
On 27 January 2016, aged 19, Awaziem appeared in his first competitive game with the main squad, featuring the full 90 minutes in a 0–2 away loss against C.D. Feirense for theTaça da Liga. His maiden appearance in the Primeira Liga took place on 12 February, as he again started in a 2–1 win at S.L. Benfica due to an injury crisis to the defensive sector.
For the 2017–18 season, Awaziem was loaned to FC Nantes.
He writes on his verified Instagram handle: “So happy to play my first official game. Was a difficult game, but glad we got all 3 points…”
At Nantes, he made 22 appearances under respected tactician, Claudio Ranieri, scoring once.
In the UEFA Champions League match away to Lokomotiv Moscow last week Wednesday, Awaziem looked on from the bench for the entire duration of the match as goals from Moussa Marega, Héctor Herrera and Jesús Corona ensured Sérgio Conceição’s men sit atop Group D with 7 points.
Then, at the weekend versus Feirense in the Primeira Liga, Awaziem was not dressed at all.
Awaziem’s Nigerian teammate, Kelechi Nwakali plays for Porto B – on loan from Arsenal. However, he has yet to make an appearance for the first team which consists of stars like Iker Casillas, Yacine Brahimi and Maximiliano Pereira.
