Newly appointed Head Coach of Real Madrid, Julen Lopetegui has appeared to backtrack on his widely believed preference for Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi.
Back in November, Lopetegui was quoted by Argentine sports website TyC Sports, saying, “Messi is the best player in history. He has extraordinary players and a coach who has given him a plus.”
The year before (in November 2016), Lopetegui voted Messi over Ronaldo for the Ballon d’Or and he has this to say about the Argentine wizard.

“I have never met a player like Leo Messi. I don’t like to compare eras,” he said at the time. “I have never seen and nor do I think I will ever see someone with Messi’s consistency.”
But when asked the Ronaldo-or-Messi question by a journalist at his presentation on Thursday, the former Porto coach chuckled as he heard the question, before responding:
“He (Cristiano Ronaldo) is a player I would always want by my side. The best in the world is at Real Madrid.”
On several occasions, he had previously said Lionel Messi was the best ever.
Infact, on a Spanish television on Monday 11th of June, 2018, a day before he got the Real Madrid job he states:
“Good teams have plenty of good players but his future on the other hand is not something to do with me.”
It is noteworthy that previously Lopetegui has also described Ronaldo as one of the best ever.
“He is the player with most merit that I can remember, he has been able to live with Messi and take away individual and team trophies from him,” explains Lopetegui.
“He is an extraordinary competitor based on discipline and work. He has led teams for many years.”
Meanwhile on Messi he adds: “he is the best player that I have known. It is difficult for us to see someone like him again.”
As for Ronaldo’s future with Real Madrid, it is possible he never plays for Lopetegui at all, as his stay with the 13 time European champions is still obscure.
