Former Nigerian international football goalkeeper and erstwhile Super Eagles Media Officer, Peterside Idah, feels Super Eagles no.1 goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho has the fundamental quality of a good goalkeeper. Idah also posits the Super Eagles goalkeeping area is well-covered.
Prior to the world cup, there were uncertainties among Nigerian football fans on the three goalkeepers manager Gernot Rohr named to soccer’s most glamorous event.
However, Uzoho, 19, started all three games of the Super Eagles in Russia, and Idah, who knows what it feels like to be between the sticks thinks Uzoho is not bad.
“Uzoho was calm, you saw the world cup. That’s what you need, the presence of that. You never saw one panic moment. Only once. The day we played against Argentina, there was a pass that the defenders expected him to come (out), but he did not come. The ball was cleared. That was the only mistake I saw him make at the world cup,” TVC reports.
GERNOT ROHR’S SQUAD ‘BALANCING WELL’
Furthermore, Idah, who is now a pastor at Christ Ambassadors Church based in Kempton Park, Johannesburg, South Africa, believes generally, the present Super Eagles team is “balancing well”.
“We have stabilised the goalkeeping department. We have two great central defenders. The Left Back position is still a little bit shaky. But the team is balancing well.”
Although, Uzoho made just two La Liga appearances for Deportivo de La Coruña, his active spell with Nigeria at the world cup should see his status rise. Ahead of the upcoming 2018-2019 season, he has reportedly resumed training with Deportivo de La Coruña’s main squad. He would have to compete for a starter’s shirt with Ruben and Przemyslaw Tyton.
