FIFA World Cup 2018: France Crowned Champions

Defeats Croatia 4-2

France have won the 21st edition of the FIFA World Cup in Russia. Les Bleus beat Croatia 4-2 in the final at the Luzhniki stadium.

It was the highest scoring final in regular time since Sweden 1958’s finale.

An own goal from Mario Mandžukić gifted the French the lead before Ivan Perišić equalised for Russia 2018 surprise package.

Video Assistance Referee (VAR) adjudged Perišić to have handled the ball in the box, and Antoine Griezmann kept his cool to duly convert.

Didier Deschamps’ wards took a 2-1 lead into half time.

The second half resumed and Paul Pogba doubled the ’98 world champions lead with a left foot shot from outside the box.

Things got worse for the Croats when 19 year old Kylian Mbappé struck into the bottom left corner. Again, from outside the box. In the process, he becomes the first teenager to score in a FIFA World Cup final since the great Pele in 1958.

Croatia were then given a lifeline after France skipper, Hugo Lloris’ howler. The goalkeeper failed to clear the ball and Mandžukić capitalised to make it 4-2.

Croatia tried to force the match into extra-time but France held on for just their second World Cup title in their entire history.

The match was watched by France’s President Emmanuel Macron and Croatia’s President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović.

France coach, Deschamps follows up his 1998 success as a player with victory at the Russian mundial.

Deschamps is only the third person to lift the trophy as a player and manager. The others being Mario Zagallo and Franz Beckenbauer. Zagallo won for Brazil in 1958 and 1970; Beckenbauer for Germany in 1974 and 1990.

Furthermore, this success erases the disappointment of the European Championship in 2016 which France hosted and lost in the final to Portugal.

Meanwhile, Croatia still awaits to win a first major international trophy. Their previous best world cup finish was 3rd 20 years ago – her debut world cup campaign. They also surprised the world then.
