The draws of the group phase of the Total CAF Champions League 2018/19 and the second 1/16th round of the Total CAF Confederation Cup 2018/19 have been finalized.
The event which took place on Friday, 28 December 2018 at the Nile Ritz-Carlton in Cairo, Egypt saw Nigeria’s sole representative in the CAF Champions League, Lobi Stars of Makurdi, pitched in Group A alongside ASEC Mimosas (Ivory Coast), Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa) and Wydad Casablanca (Morocco).
For Rangers International of Enugu, who are also the country’s only representative in CAF’s second tier club competition, they get a seemingly easy draw.
The reigning Aiteo Cup champion trade tackle with Bantu F.C of Lesotho in the 2nd 1/16th round of CAF Confederation Cup. First leg is in the Southern African nation between 11-13 of January, 2019.
Reigning Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions, Lobi had to overcome Gor Mahia of Kenya in the qualifiers to proceed the group stage, while The Flying Antelopes saw off USM Bel Abbes of Algeria to make it to the next round of the qualification stage.
Lobi’s opponents are past winners of the CAF Champions League: Wydad Casablanca (1992 and 2017), Mamelodi Sundowns (2016) and ASEC Mimosas (1998).
Enyimba remains the only Nigerian side to have won Africa’s premier club competition. The Aba-based side did it back-to-back, in 2003 and 2004.
