Despite being a faith-based institution, Ajayi Crowther University has reinstated Dr. Adeyinka Adeoye, a lecturer previously found guilty of sexually assaulting two students, and recently appointed him as head of the English department, according to FIJ.
According to an inside source, the allegations against Dr. Adeoye began in 2022 when a female student in the Department of English accused him of sexual assault.
Shortly after, another student came forward with similar claims.
In response, the university formed a disciplinary panel to investigate, and the panel ultimately found Dr. Adeoye guilty.
Many expected the verdict would lead to his termination, yet the university opted for a different course.
After the two students graduated in 2022, Dr. Adeoye returned to work at the university’s radio station.
In 2023, he was reinstated to his previous position in the English department, now holding the title of department head.
The insider told FIJ that, despite testimony against him from other department staff, the university is reportedly considering his promotion to associate professor.
“This is supposed to be a faith-based institution owned by the Anglican Communion,” said the source. “The university waited until the affected students graduated, then allowed him back into the department.”
FIJ reached out to the panel members who handled the case, but they declined to comment and referred all inquiries to the university’s spokesperson.
The chaplain of Ajayi Crowther University later contacted FIJ, expressing concern about “ruining a man’s life after he has been punished.”
On Monday, the Public Relations Officer (PRO), Femi Atoyebi, invited FIJ to visit the campus for more details and asked for an official list of questions, adding that sensitive issues like this aren’t discussed over the phone.
