A Nigerian man, identified on X as @Blaqtymus, has accused Wema Bank of allowing scammers and fraudsters to operate freely through its services without taking any action.
He expressed his frustration in a post, stating, “@wemabank The only bank in Nigeria to allow scammers/fraudsters use the bank freely without any action taken. @cenbank suppose don take this useless bank licence since. And how long they going to allow Wema Bank to enable fraudsters to use the bank to scam people??”
The accusation comes amidst a report by TOP MEDIA about the case of Abdulazeez, a Lagos-based medical doctor, who was defrauded after his smartphone was stolen.
According to the report, Abdulazeez’s phone was stolen on May 28 while he was returning home from work.
The thieves used his phone to take out a N583,000 loan from his Wema Bank account without his authorisation.
The fraudulent loans included a N550,000 salary advance and a N33,000 payday loan, which were both transferred to an Opay account between May 28 and May 29.
Despite Abdulazeez’s prompt efforts to block his accounts with other banks, he was unable to reach Wema Bank’s customer care to block his account there.
The bank has since begun deducting money from his account to repay the fraudulent loan, despite Abdulazeez filing a police report and providing an affidavit.
Wema Bank informed Abdulazeez that he would need a court order, costing at least N100,000, to take further action against the fraudulent account where the money was transferred.
Responding to the situation, Wema Bank’s digital support centre agent, Ayomide Akanni, confirmed that an investigation is ongoing and reassured that they are in direct communication with Abdulazeez.
