Rajesh Hooblal, the Head of Environment of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemical Complex, has shared insights on Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) in the petroleum industry.
Hooblal commented on solutions to enhance sustainability and resilience in a sector he deemed “vital”.

Oil refineries are major polluters, consuming large amounts of energy and water, producing large quantities of wastewaters, releasing hazardous gases into the atmosphere and generating solid waste that are difficult both to treat and to dispose of. But Hooblal noted that at Dangote Refinery in Lekki, Lagos, there exists a sulphur dioxide recovery unit that prevents pollution of the environment from the refinery.
Majolagbe stresses essence of Environmental Impact Assessment
Meanwhile, during the event, Engr. Yusuf Majolagbe, the Chairman of the NIEE Lagos State chapter, explained why EIA is important. According to him, EIA serves as a cornerstone in ensuring the preservation of the planet’s precious ecosystems.
He said:
“In essence, EIA provides a systematic framework for evaluating the potential environmental consequences of proposed projects or policies, allowing us to mitigate adverse impacts and promote environmental stewardship.
“In today’s ever-evolving landscape, characterised by rapid industrialisation and urbanisation, the significance of EIA cannot be overstated. It empowers us to strike a delicate balance between economic progress and environmental conservation, safeguarding both our natural heritage and the well-being of future generations.”
