The National Naibul-Amir (Vice President) of The Companion, Imam Nojeem Jimoh, has lamented that the number of young and highly skilled people leaving the country, in search of greener pastures overseas, is worrisome.
Imam Jimoh expressed the worry, during an interview with the Media, Mobilization and Publicity sub-committee.
He was speaking to the MMPC on the forthcoming 2024 Conference and 6th National Discourse.
Imam Jimoh, who is also the Chairman of the National Organising Committee of the exercise, said: “the so-called japa syndrome” was the focus of this year’s National Discourse.
The Discourse with the theme: “Between Patriotism and Self-Preservation” and topic: “Dilemma of the Nigerian Youth: Challenges at Home, Uncertainties Abroad” comes up on Saturday, August 10, 2024, inside the auditorium of the National University Commission, Abuja, at 10.00 am.
According to Naibul-Amir, the choice of this year’s topic was “influenced by what was now generally acknowledged as a national concern.”
Speaking further, Jimoh disclosed: “the Discourse is the The Companion’s flagship programme as part of our contributions to issues of national importance.”
On the choice of Abuja as the venue, he responded: “the choice of Abuja is a bold and daring one for the association.
“As you know, the first five editions of this event took place in Lagos. But the association boasts of a budding presence in the nation’s capital.
“We thought to challenge ourselves by leaving our comfort zone in Lagos and stage an event as successful as previous editions in Lagos.”
Imam Jimoh stated further that attendance was significant, enjoining all Nigerians, especially the younger generation and professionals to join the organisation at the upcoming August event.
The NOC Chairman, confirmed that the event would be live-streamed in its entirety, adding that it would also be available on the association’s website, as well as on prominent social media platforms.
