Squash: History Made as Adegoke Onaopemipo Becomes 1st Nigerian to Win 2 PSA Challenger Titles

Adegoke Onaopemipo made history at the Squash Inspire – Play Squash Academy Men’s $6K Challenger, becoming the first Nigerian player ever to win a $6k event.

TOP MEDIA reports that Onaopemipo also became the first Nigerian athlete to win two PSA Challenger titles.

The 25-year-old was the No.1 seed at the tournament in the US, but truly had to earn his victory with a hard-fought week, in which he beat South Africa’s Callan Hall 3-1 in round two before being taken the distance in each of his quarter-final and semi-final encounters.

He came out on top both times, though, setting up a trophy showdown with unseeded Indian Yash Bhargava, who stunned second seed Ahsan Ayaz in the semi-finals.

Perhaps unsurprisingly given Onaopemipo’s week up to that point, the final on November 23, 2024, went to a decider, but the Nigerian saved his best squash for when it mattered most, dominating game five to take it 11-3 and clinching glory.
