Gabriel Olufunmilayo and Busayo Olatunji became the first Nigerian players to wrap up multiple PSA Squash tour titles, winning the 2nd John Hett Sports Foundation Squash tournament in Lagos.
TOP MEDIA reports that Olufunmilayo and Olatunji won the respective men’s and women’s titles at the Yellow Dots Squash Open in March, and backed that up with victory at the same location — the Teslim Balogun Squash Court in Lagos.
The $3,000 prize money (each for men and women) event was held between October 7 and 12.
Men’s No.1 seed Olufunmilayo lost only one game all week, against Matthew Yusuf in the quarter-finals, but he still needed 55 minutes to beat Kehinde Samuel 3-0 in the men’s final — a rematch of the Yellow Dots final.
The women’s final was also a rematch of the Yellow Dots final which had gone to five, and this one went the distance once more, as Olatunji and No.1 seed Rofiat Abdulazeez battled it out for almost an hour. But just as she did in March, Olatunji came out on top in the fifth, winning it 11-8 to secure her second Tour title.
Final (men)
Olufunmilayo 11, 14, 11 (3)
Samuel 7, 12, 5 (0)
Final (women)
Abdulazeez 6, 11, 14, 7, 8 (2)
Olatunji 11, 4, 12, 11, 11 (3)
