Nigeria’s Lolade Adewuyi Gets Special Mention At AIPS Sport Media Awards

Nigerian sports journalist, Lolade Adewuyi, on Tuesday, 9 May, received a special mention for his story on the threat of violence his colleagues are confronted with in his homeland.

TOP MEDIA reports that Deutsche Welle (DW‘s) Adewuyi’s piece for the Germany-based outfit was given an honourable mention following the fifth edition (for year 2022) of the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) Sport Media Awards. The event came to a conclusion this morning (Tuesday) with a gala in Seoul, the capital of South Korea.

Adewuyi’s stand-out article titled ‘Nigerian sports writers under threat of violence’, was specially commended in the Safeguarding Journalism Working Condition genre.

Since 2020, the AIPS has introduced the special commendations it offered to top-rated works whose values are aligned with the cornerstone values of the association. These values include defending Human Rights and gender equality, fighting against racism and all forms of discrimination, promoting a clean sports environment, offering hope towards sports, promoting sports as an answer to violence in conflict zones, reporting with independence and freedom, defending the importance of access to sources for interviews, contributing to the development of women’s sport, acknowledging the future of sports, detecting and featuring original sports stories, raising awareness about mental health, and presenting innovative ways of sports reporting, among others.

Apart from the award winners who were present to pick up their prizes (some — not all of them), 25 “special” works of 2022 were acknowledged for “deserved” note. And Adewuyi’s work was part of it.
